Modern pharmaceutical supply chains are global and complex. The pandemic has clearly demonstrated the risks of supply-chain disruptions, and the importance of building greater resilience into supply chains so they are better able to withstand shocks.

In addition, the threat of climate change has called into question the environmental sustainability of long supply chains, both in terms of emissions from transportation and in terms of carbon leakage from countries with strict climate policies.
