What will 2022 bring?
Will we finally see the end of the pandemic in 2022? The World Health Organization (WHO) is hopeful that this year will mark the end, at least, of the “acute stage” of the pandemic. However, this will mean international cooperation and efforts to boost vaccination rates. New variants could still emerge, of course, but we have all the tools we need to defeat the coronavirus if we use them effectively.
In April, French President Emmanuel Macron is up for re-election. Polling suggests he will likely face either conservative Valérie Pécresse or Marine Le Pen, of the far-right National Rally party, in a presidential run-off. Macron has tacked to the right in this election, particularly on immigration.
The Conference on the Future of Europe should be concluded in early 2022. Will it lead to substantial changes, particularly if the recommendations need treaty change to implement? Can anything meaningful be achieved without unanimous agreement between Member State governments?
